Steel Park

Inner West Council engaged Welsh + Major to re-imagine an existing caretakers building as a new community centre in parklands adjoining the Cooks River. The centre caters for mother’s groups, a breakfast club, children’s play groups, community meetings, small functions, education uses and a pop-up library. The centre is intended to become an important gathering place for the local indigenous people – the Gadigal and Wangal people of the Eora nation, who are the traditional custodians of the area.

The project also features new artwork by prominent indigenous artist Blak Douglas, whom we worked with to create the building colour palette and approach.
