Comedor Restaurant

This old Newtown factory has been transformed into a long, languid space stretching from the street to the park at the rear. The street façade and a clerestoried aisle are painted in ultramarine, the latter holding a moulded timber banquette that runs along the southern edge of the space as a counterpoint to the 16 metre long kitchen bar lined in figured stone and hand crafted tiles imported from Japan.

Towards the rear of the space the blue gives way to colours of red oxide painted surfaces and tobacco coloured tiles – the new colour palette inspired by the works Josef Albers’ created during his multiple trips to Mexico – before opening out onto the park through a cinematic widescreen folding window underlined with a rich red stone countertop.

The space is confident, calm and flexible – casual by day and sophisticated by night, to be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
