Darling Lane

New South Wales

An idea began to take shape about how it would be great if this warehouse had one or two more rooms that could be used for multiple uses. The space left to explore any opportunities was a 3.3 metre wide airspace above an existing garage, which also served as the entry to their home.

Having only one elevation to articulate and connect the spaces to the outside, we set about using a series of devices to access light and air.

New geometries were explored with the fenestrated laneway facade. Taking the proportions of the original building's windows, some of the new openings

copy the original, whilst others extend, stretch, and overlay new forms to generate depth across the face of the new building envelope.

This new form is simply the latest chapter written into the story of the site. It isn’t the first, and it probably won't be the last.
